What are Alliances?

An alliance is an agreement between two or more countries, to give each other help if it is needed. Many alliances have been signed by different countries in-between the years 1879 and 1914. Alliances are very important because some of the countries have no choice but to declare war if one of their allies declare war first.

The Alliance system was started by Ottovon Bismarck. He was a German Chancellor from 1871 to 1890. After the Franco-Prussian war Bismarck acknowledged that Germany was a "Satiated State". This means "full state."
